The Harvard Graduate Student Government, colloquially known as "the HGSG" and formerly known as the "Harvard Graduate Council" or "HGC", is the university-wide representative student government for the twelve graduate and professional schools of Harvard University. The HGSG is responsible for advocating student concerns to central administrators - including the President of Harvard University, Provost, Deans of Students, and Deans for the nearly 15,000 graduate and professional students across the twelve schools, organizing large university-wide initiatives and events, administering and providing funding for university-wide student groups (USGs),[1][2] and representing the Harvard graduate student population to other universities and external organizations.[3] The HGSG has become well known for creating and executing on advocacy initiatives and events focused on the "One Harvard" movement.[4][5] The HGSG also interfaces with its undergraduate counterpart, the Harvard Undergraduate Council.

Membership
All matriculated students of Harvard's twelve graduate and professional schools are members of the HGSG:

  3. Harvard Extension School (HES)
  4. Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS)
  5. Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD)
  6. Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE)
  7. Harvard Kennedy School of Government (HKS)
  8. Harvard Law School (HLS)
  9. Harvard Medical School (HMS)
  10. Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM)
  11. Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS)
  12. Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH)

Leadership
The governing body of the HGSG, known as the Leadership Council, is made of an Executive Board, Senators, and Committee Representatives. As of 2014, there were approximately 100 graduate and professional students serving on 7 committees and 23 subcommittees within the Leadership Council. Leadership Council meetings are held throughout the fall and spring semesters and are open to all students from Harvard’s graduate and professional schools [6]

Operations

University administrators often consult with the HGSG on a variety of issues facing Harvard graduate students.[38][39] HGSG leadership also serves on various faculty-administrator-student committees and task forces focusing on issues such as the student health care, campus planning, Harvard presidential appointments, and sexual assault.[40][41]

University-wide Student Groups (USG)

The Harvard Graduate Student Government (HGSG) provides operational and event grant funding for recognized university wide student organizations through the University-wide Student Groups Sub-Committee of the HGSG Finance Committee.

Events

In addition to advocating on behalf of graduate students, the HGSG endeavors to provide a variety of programming and events to connect students on academic and social dimensions. This includes large conferences and social events to speed dating and can drives for the homeless.[49][50]

The HGSG creates and organizes university-wide headline events including the Harvard-wide Welcome Back Event [51][52] Harvard Masquerade Ball,[53][54][55] Harvard Leadership Conference,[56][57] Lectures That Last,[58][59] and Post.Harvard.
