Hary Tanoesoedibjo (born 1965) is an Indonesian citizen, born in Surabaya in 1965. He is the President Director of PT MNC Investama Tbk since 2009. He holds Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from Carleton University, Canada (1988) and Master of Business Administration degree from Ottawa University, Canada (1989).
Being the founder of MNC Group, he directly oversees and develops the strategy of the holding company as well as the subsidiaries, bringing them to be leading companies in their respective areas.
In media sector, he currently serves as President Director of PT Global Mediacom Tbk (since 2002), President Director of RCTI (2003-2008 and 2010–present) and President Commissioners of PT MNC Sky Vision Tbk (since 2006). In non-media sector, he also serves as President Commissioner of PT MNC Kapital Indonesia Tbk since July 1999, President Commissioner of PT MNC Securities since February 2004,Commissioner of PT Global Transport Services since March 2010, President Director of PT MNC Land Tbk since April 2011, and President Director of PT MNC Energi since February 2012. In addition to his active participation as a speaker at various media events at national and international levels, he teaches in the post-graduate programs of several universities in the areas of corporate finance, investment and management strategies.[1]
He was listed on Forbes as the 9th richest people of Indonesia.[2]
Early life
Hary was born in Surabaya, East Java on 26 September 1965, as a son of local businessman Mr. Tanoesoedibjo. He is the youngest of four siblings, after finished highschool, he continued to college at Carleton University, in Canada. In 1988, he gained bachelor of commerce, then master's degree of Business Administration, finished in 1989 at the same university. Hary married Liliana Tanaja and have five children, and the only son being Warren Haryputra Tanoesoedibjo.
Business Empire
Hary established PT.MNC Investama in Surabaya on 2 November 1989 and moved its headquarters to Jakarta in 1990. The Company is a leading investment company in Indonesia with a scope of business that spans Media, Financial Services, Energy and Natural Resources as well as Portfolio Investments.
The Company was initially named PT Bhakti Investments (later changed to PT Bhakti Investama Tbk) and focused primarily on capital market-related activities. The Government, which was at that time pursuing a deregulation policy, provided a number of facilities to boost Indonesia’s capital market.
The Company’s relocation to Jakarta in February 1990 brought greater opportunities to develop the business in line with the evolving capital market. In 1994, the Company expanded the scope of its business to include securities trading and brokerage, investment advisory, investment manager, underwriter, origination and syndication, financial advisory and research services, as well as mergers and acquisitions, followed by the launch of mutual fund products. The trust demonstrated by the customers convinced the Company to list its stocks on the Jakarta Stock Exchange and the Surabaya Stock Exchange (now merged into the Indonesia Stock Exchange) through an Initial Public Offering in 1997.
After becoming a public company, the Company underwent a vast development. To strengthen the Company’s position as one of Indonesia’s leading investment companies, we completed a number of corporate actions, including restructuring, mergers, acquisitions and direct placement. With regard to portfolio investment, the Company’s approach covered both securities and equity investments. For a short-term investments, the Company targeted marketable securities and developed partnerships with strategic investors to pursue its long-term investment agenda of acquisitions of companies with healthy cash flow to sustain long-term growth.
With more diversified products and services, ranging from media, financial services, energy and natural resources to infrastructure, the Company adds greater value for investors, shareholders and other stakeholders. It also makes the Company even more confident about its ability to attract a more diversified investor profile, from pension funds, the banking industry and insurance to fund managers, to invest in the Company. PT Bhakti Investama Tbk was officially changed to PT MNC Investama Tbk. The changing of the name was ratified by the General Meeting of Shareholders on 2 May 2013 and was approved by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights on the 23rd of August 2013. The stock code remains unchanged as BHIT. The changing of the name of PT Bhakti Investama Tbk to PT MNC Investama Tbk is expected to enhance the profile of the company and solidify synergies within MNC Group.
By decades, Hary business empire have grown to many sectors such as television, radio, newspapers, advertising agency, talent agency, music records, online sites, telecommunication, investment, and mining with more than 50 companies. On 2011, Hary launches JKT48 with Yasushi Akimoto.
Politics
On August 2011, Hary joined Nasdem Party (Partai Nasdem), one of Indonesia's politics party which was founded by Surya Paloh. This was Hary's first experience in politics but rumors said Hary and Nasdem had been approaching each other long time before he decided to join.[3] By end of 2012, rumors said there was a struggle between Hary and Surya to reach chairman position of Nasdem party. It was not confirmed until 17 February 2013, Hary announced that he had left Nasdem party and joined Hanura (Hati Nurani Rakyat) party, which founded by Wiranto, a retired General of Indonesian army. It was never stated that Hary left because of struggle. Instead, he stated that he has different vision between Surya and him.[4] Eventually Hanura party declared Wiranto and Hary as the candidate for President and Vice President of Indonesia on 2 July 2013, and both will participate in 2014 presidential election.[5] Now, Hary declarates the new party called "Partai Perindo".
