Abbasi used to be basiji in the Iran-Iraq war, which is disputed by General Ali Shamkhani. "We had not enough soldiers at the end of war. Because the people like Abbasi didn't join us in the battleground." General Shamkhani has said.[4] In response to Shamkhani's allegation, Abbasi said that he was in the frontline of the war. "When the generals like Shamkhani were sitting in their comfortable chair, my friends and I were fighting Against the Saddam's troops in the Hawizeh Marshes." Abbasi said.[5]

Abbasi is known as a doctor, But he has not reached PhD license ever. Although he claims that more than 100 PhD dissertations are supervised by him. "The New York Times writes about me every week and they have called me the Kissinger of Islam." Abbasi has said. However the Aftabnews (an Iranian news agency) checked the online archive of The New York Times and didn't find any mention of Abbasi.[6] Maybe hi meant one of the New York Post's articles which is mentioned him as the Kissinger of Islam.[7]
