Hatsingimari is the headquarter of South Salmara-Mankachar District(Assam), India. Previously, it was the headquarter of South Salmara Mankachar Subdivision. On 15 August 2015, Assam's Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced South Salmara-Mankachar as an administrative district along with other 4 districts. On 9 February 2016 Commissioner M.I. Ahmed inaugurated it. It has a population of 3445 people (as per the 2011 census). It also has a Higher literacy rate of 77.73% as compared to the 73.72% of Assam.

Entymology

The name Hatsingimari is derived from two different words Hat and Singimari. The word Hat means weekly market, and every Sunday a Hat is held in the place, and that's why it got the word Hat in its name. The word Singimari means, "fishing of Singhi fish". Probably, the place was famous for the availability of Singhi fish (Heteropneustes fossilis) in the past, and that's why the name!

Geography

Hatsingimari is located at the westernmost part of the south bank of Assam. To its South it is Mankachar town, to its West it is river Jinjiram a tributary of the Brahmaputra. Moreover, it shares its border with Meghalaya in the East. It is just 5 km away from Indo-Bangladesh border.

Politics

Hatsingimari is the part of Dhubri (Lok Sabha constituency). And it is also a part of 21, Mankachar constituency of the Assam Legislative Assembly. Hatsingimari is also under Fulerchar Gram Panchayat and Sukchar Zila Parishad. Present MLA is independent candidate Zabed Islam (alias Biplop) from 2011 to till date. And the present MP is AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, from 2009 till date.

Govt. Facilities

There is a Civil Hospital, D.C Office, S.P Office, District Court, Foreigners Tribunal Court, Auditorium Hall, Circuit House, Fire Station, Police Station etc in this place. Many other Government offices which are required in a district are being proposed, and it is hoped that by the year 2020 all will be completed.

Transportation

The primary means of public transportation preferred by the locals are three wheeler tempo auto rickshaw which are maintained by private owners. Cars are rare, people mostly uses bikes and bicycle. The place is well connected with launch and ferry services with Dhubri. Both private and Government transport buses runs from Hatsingimari to Goalpara and Guwahati from 5-6 am in the morning and 7-8 pm in the evening. The pwd roads in Hatsingimari are not maintained well and are full of potholes.

Education

There are several renowned govt. and private schools and colleges in Hatsingimari area. Some of them are Rainbow English Academy, Sarbojanin Hatsingimari Jatiya Vidyalaya, Namoni Axom Jatiya Vidyalaya, Shankar Azaan Jatiya Vidyalaya, Elite Academy, Hatsingimari College, Ajmal College etc. Moreover, there are many private coaching and tuition classes in this place. Students from Meghalaya and other parts of the district comes here for their schooling. This place has very good educational facilities and has a very high literacy rate in comparison to other parts of Assam.

The Hat

The weekly market, or Hat is held every Sunday from 7am to 6pm. It is held over an area of 2 sq km and is recognised as one of the largest Hat in Assam. Each type of products has been assigned a specific place in the Hat,and these places are known as Hatii. For example in Vegetable Hatii, only vegetables are sold. There are about 30-40 Hatii in the Hat and each Hatii contains more than 10-15 shops and all are always adjacent to each other. Livestock, Vegetables, Cashew, Iron and Steel Weapons, Timber , Fruits, Poultry, Jute, Rice Grain, Clothes, Toys, Pulses and Lentils, Various Spices, Fishes, Beef, Milk and Milk products, Furnitures, Clay products, Dry Fishes , Iron Items, Mechanical Items and various other products are sold and each category has a different Hatii. About one lakh people comes to shop in the Hat every Sunday.

Senior Advocates of the district like Mr.Anwaruzzaman, Hamid Khan, ASM Jehangir lives at Hatsingimari. Most senior advocate in the district is advocate Anwaruzzaman who has an experience of about 40 years in law practise. One can easily contact them by contacting Hatsingimari Bar Council for legal services.

Medical Services

Senior physicians like D.H Khan, Sirajul Islam etc lives near Hatsingimari. Most senior among them is doctor DH Khan who has an experience of about 38 years in medical practise. For medical help and consultation one can go to their clinic .
