Hayward John Clay Jr. (born July 5, 1973) is a former American football tight end. He played college football for the Texas A&M. He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the 6th round (201st overall) of the 1996 NFL draft.
College career
Clay attended Texas A&M where appeared in 46 career games.[1] In 1992, as a freshman he appeared in 13 games catching one pass for 11 yards for a team that went 12-1. However, the Aggies lost the Cotton Bowl 28-3 to Notre Dame.[2] In 1993, as a sophomore, he appeared in 11 catchinhg five passes for 85 yards.[1] Again the Aggies lost the Cotton Bowl to Notre Dame. In 1994 as a junior, he appeared in 11 games catching four passes for 37 yards for an Aggies team that went 10-0-1 and finished the season ranked 8th.[3] In 1995, as a senior, he appeared in 11 games catching 19 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns.[1]
Professional career
Clay was selected in the sixth round (201st overall) by the St. Louis Rams. As a rookie, he appeared in 11 games, starting 4. He caught four passes for 51 yards. On June 25, 1998, he signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Bears.[4] He was released on August 30, 1998.[4] Two days later he was claimed off waivers by the Dallas Cowboys.[4] For the 1998 season, he appeared in three games, starting two. On December 20, he caught his only pass of the season, for 27 yards.[5] On August 31, 1999, he was placed on injured reserve as a result, he missed the entire season.[4] He was cut by the Cowboys on February 10, 2000.[4] On May 16, 2000 he was signed by the Miami Dolphins.[4] He was cut during training camp on August 22.[4]
