Hempel A/S is a world-leading coatings supplier for the decorative, protective, marine, container and yacht markets, headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark.. The company is owned by the Hempel Foundation which supports cultural, humanitarian and scientific charities around the world.
History
Hempel was founded by Jørgen Christian Hempel who at the age of 21 was licensed as a wholeseller of marine paint in July 1915. The following year he set up his own paint mixing factory. In 1917, Hempel collaborated with Technical University of Denmark on the development of the world's first antifouling coating for ships’ hulls.[3]
In 1948, J. C. Hempel set up the Hempel Foundation, which is now the sole shareholder of the company.
In 2011 Hempel acquired Crown Paints, a leading paint manufacturer in the United Kingdom.
Headquarters
In March 2012 the construction of Hempel's new headquarters started. The new headquarters are located in Lundtoftegårdsvej in Lundtofte in the northern suburbs of Copenhagen. The building is designed by Årstiderne Arkitekter and is located next to Hempel's R&D centre. Hempel's old headquarters have been sold to DTU.[4]
