Herman A. DeVry
Herman A. DeVry (November 26, 1876 - March 23, 1941) was an American inventor, aviator, and colleague of Lee De Forest. DeVry is credited with creating the first portable motion picture projector,[1] which he called a Theatre in a Suitcase. [2][3] He was the founder of the DeVry Company.[4]
Early life
DeVry was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, and immigrated to the United States in 1886.
Career
As a young man DeVry worked as a cameraman for the Rothacker company in Chicago.
Later he founded the DeVry company.[5] In 1912 DeVry developed a new type of 35mm film projector which could be carried in its own small suitcase.[6] The American government bought many of these during World War I.[7] The company sold over 50,000 Type E projectors to schools [8] and also created and distributed educational films,[9] earning him the nickname The Father of Visual Education.
DeVry's original hand-built prototype portable projector is on display at the Smithsonian.[10]
In 1931, DeVry and colleague Lee DeForest founded the DeForest Training School in Chicago, which eventually became DeVry University.[11]
DeVry died in 1941.[12]
