8. It is formally derived from 2,3-naphthoquinone (2,3-naphtalenedione) through replacement of all six hydrogen atoms by hydroxyl (OH) groups. The full IUPAC name is 1,4,5,6,7,8-hexahydroxynaphthalene-2,3-dione, but the positions of the hydroxyl groups need not be indicated, since there is no other hexahydroxy derivative of 2,3-naphthoquinone.
