Himalaya Airlines (IATA: H9),[1] a new Nepal-China joint venture airline, is an international scheduled full service air carrier incorporated and based in Nepal. The Airline has scheduled its first destinations at Colombo (Sri Lanka) Delhi (India) and Doha (Qatar) in April 2016 followed by Lhasa, Chengdu and Beijing in China a few months later.

Himalaya Airlines had welcomed its first new aircraft, an A320-200 (MSN 6626, registration number 9N-ALM), on March 9, 2016 at 14:25 NST, providing a water cannon salute upon its arrival, adopting the tradition in the aviation industry. To mark the show, Ferry Team was welcomed by a Nepal’s Army Band playing auspicious “Mangal Dhoon".[2] This aircraft carried the Right Honorable Prime Minister, Mr. K.P. Oli, Madam Radhika Shakya and the delegation on an official visit to Beijing, the capital city of the People’s Republic of China at 11:00 NST on March 20, 2016.[3]

The airline has made full preparation in terms of training flight crew and maintenance personnel and has in place systems, people and infrastructure to start commercial flights.

History

Tibet Airlines holds 48.99% of equity capital of the company, whereas the Nepalese side holds 51.01% . Together, they are investing US$25 million in what was formerly known as Yeti Air International – the biggest foreign investment ever in Nepal's aviation sector.[4]

Himalaya Airlines had earlier planned to launch its scheduled flights in July 2015 but the plan was deferred due to the devastating earthquakes of April 25 and May 12, 2015. Now the company has re-planned to start international flights operation in April 2016 scheduling its first destinations at Colombo (Sri Lanka) Delhi (India) and Doha (Qatar) in April 2016 followed by Lhasa, Chengdu and Beijing in China a few months later. Over the coming five years, the airline aims at acquiring 15 Airbus A320 family aircraft and will operate from Kathmandu to various cities in Asia and beyond. The company will introduce long haul wide body aircraft of A330 family in due course of time for the operation of direct flights to Japan, Korea, Europe, Australia, and America.[5]
