Hoang Anh Gia Lai – Arsenal JMG Academy is a football academy in Pleiku, Gia Lai Province, Tay Nguyen of Vietnam. The academy is a built as cooperation between Arsenal Football Club,[2] JMG Academy and the Vietnamese privately owned Hoang Anh Gia Lai Corporation. This football academy is the first one in Vietnam so far.[3] It is also a feeder club to Hoang Anh Gia Lai in the V-League.[4]
In Vietnam, football is the number one sport. However, Vietnam has won just a few cups in ASEAN football tournaments with the most recent one being the AFF Suzuki Cup as Thailand is still the best team in the region. The causes of low success rate of Vietnam’s football team are always the lack of systematic training. One of the aims of the academy is to help to promote Vietnam’s football team in future matches.
In August 2009, two players were sent to train with the Arsenal first team.[5]
Criticism
The decision to set up the academy has been criticised since the Hoang Anh Gia Lai Corporation is controversially involved in deforestation of the Vietnamese forests.[6]
