Germán Alejandro Garmendia Aranis (born 25 April, 1990), known by his YouTube channels HolaSoyGermán and JuegaGerman is a Chilean YouTuber, comedian, musician, singer and writer. He has produced a variety of songs together with his band, all available on youtube. His first (and only) book titled "#Chupaelperro" came out at multiple stores of Latin America and Spain on the 28th of April of 2016. His channel is currently the 2nd most subscribed on YouTube[note 1] and the first one in the Spanish language.
Early life and YouTube career
Garmendia was born on April 25, 1990 in Santiago, Chile. Unfortunately, his childhood was marked by a horrific event. His father died in a car accident when he was only 3 years old, during christmas. His mother was devastated, however, she decided that her two kids shouldn't feel the same way, so she took them to travel around the world. German has an older brother who's name is Diego, from whom he lived separately during childhood until reuniting in Los Vilos after a while. He had an inmense interest in music from a considerably young age, and when he was 13 he formed a band with his brother that was called "Zudex".[4]
Garmendia uploaded his first YouTube video in 2011, after being encouraged by his friends.[5][6]
As of April 28, 2016, his YouTube channel has over 27 million subscribers, ranking him as the second most subscribed channel on YouTube, after PewDiePie. [7]
On August 2014 and 2015, he won the "Icon of the Year" prize from MTV Millennial Awards 2014.[8] He made a brief appearance in YouTube Rewind 2014[9] and appeared for a way longer time in 2015 due to how much he had accomplished during that year.[10]
Book
Garmendia's book is titled "#Chupaelperro" (Spanish for "Lick the dog"). He describes it as a mix between a book and a magazine. The name comes from an inside joke between him and his fans that appears on multiple videos, (as an attempt of improving a common vulgar phrase in Spanish). Garmendia will be on a book tour around some countries of Latin America and Spain
Incident in Mexico
In April 2014, Garmendia was scheduled to appear at the Telmex Digital Village in Zócalo, Mexico City.[11] The event experienced an unplanned excess of attendees, and many people waiting in line to see Garmendia fainted due to heat exposure, and had to be evacuated. Eventually, the crowd became unruly, with attendees forcing their way past barriers and into the tented area, causing many injuries. Ten people were injured when a light element fell into the crowd. After security regained control of the situation, the crowd was dispersed and Garmendia's event was cancelled. He later expressed condolences to his fans for the incident.[12][13]
