Holywell High School is an english medium comprehensive school for 11- to 18-year-olds in Flintshire, Wales. It serves the town of Holywell and neighbouring villages and rural communities in the northern part of the county. The roll is currently 840 pupils.

It is an inclusive school with a strong community ethos. The school is noted for the care and attention given to the personal and social development of each individual student. The school tries very hard to maintain a friendly and secure environment.

The School actively promotes high standards of achievement and discourages antisocial behaviour. This should ensure that a positive atmosphere prevails in the school.

There is a range of extra-curricular activities, especially in sport, science and the arts. These provide an important and valuable extension to students’ experiences.

History

The building standing today was built in the 1950s and opened in 1954. It was originally Basingwerk Secondary Modern School (named after the local Abbey). It merged with Holywell Grammar School in the late 1960s following the introduction of Comprehensive education in Flintshire. Its first headmaster was Brynmor Jarvis MA.

There were 2 buildings which made up the school, Lower and Upper buildings. The Lower building catered for 11-13 year olds and the Upper building for 14-18 year olds and included the Sixth Form. The upper building was demolished in the mid 1990s to make way for a new housing development and the Lower building was remodelled to accommodate the whole school into one building.

Future

A proposed replacement high school was approved May, 2014. The 600 place school will be built on the grounds of the existing school and is expected to open in September, 2016.[1]
