Honda BR-V

The Honda BR-V is a compact SUV that is previewed by Honda as a concept in the middle of 2015. BR-V stands for Bold Runabout Vehicle. Despite being categorised as compact SUV, in Indonesia it is seen as a crossover utility vehicle or CUV. It is expected to be well-priced below the Honda HR-V and Honda CR-V owing to the status of being an inexpensive SUV or CUV.

The Honda BR-V is derived on the same platform as the second generation of Honda Mobilio based on the small eldest sibling namely Honda Brio allowing to share mechanical components including powerplants. It is also based on the philosophy of "Active Solid Motion" to look premium and tougher in the class.

Concept, Development and Production

In June 29th, 2015, the unveiling of a concept of the newly created BR-V was made at the 2015 GIIAS and IIMS in Indonesia. It was the third concept that is under the development of Honda Research and Development (R&D) Asia Pacific Co. Ltd. (HRAP), Thailand as well as P.T. Honda R&D Indonesia.

According to Tomoki Uchida, Director of Honda Prospect Motor Indonesia, the derivation of the BR-V will serve as an answer to rising customer demands and needs for inexpensive SUV that rides higher, sleek design and capable to load 7 passengers at one trip.[1] As BR-V is targeted particularly for Asia market, mass production will take place at several plants with different commencement date.

Specifications and Features

The Honda BR-V is measured at a length of 4,455 mm (175.4 in), width of 1,735 mm (68.3 in) and a height of 1,650 mm (65 in). The wheelbase of 2,660 mm (105 in) unveils sufficient booth space while the ground clearance of 201 mm (7.9 in) allows a bit of off-roading.

In Thailand, Honda BR-V is capable to accommodate 5 passengers with its 2-row seating revealing massive cargo space as well as 7 passengers[2] with its 3-row seating at the expense of boot space.

All variants will receive great cosmetic touches such as roof rails and LED tail light design at the rear with C-character. Honda BR-V will also ride on a 16-inch diamond-like alloy rims on 195/60 R16 tyres as well as a high ground clearance of 201 mm (7.9 in). BR-V with 7 passengers seating structure will be equipped with rear air-conditioner extensively for the second and third row of seats. The India-spec BR-V too gets most of these features. However, Honda is yet to offer features like reverse park assist and a touchscreen infotainment unit along with sat-nav. [3]

Engines and Transmissions

Honda BR-V will be made available with two different engines and transmission options for sporty performance and greater fuel efficiency namely; 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines mated to either 6-speed manual transmission or continuously variable transmission, although a 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine that is widely seen in European Honda Civic will be made available at an unspecified date. A standard L15Z1 SOHC 1.5-litre with i-VTEC will power the BR-V that generates 118 hp (88 kW) at 6600 rpm and 107 lb·ft (145 N·m) of torque at 4600 rpm.

Safety Features

Various safety features are offered as standard. These are anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic braking distribution (EBD), dual SRS airbags, hill start assist (HSA) that prevents the BR-V from rolling back as well as Honda's vehicle stability assist (VSA).
