The Hong Duc University (HDU) is a regional university located in Vietnam, belonging to the government in the province of Thanh Hoa. It offers bachelor's and master's degrees, mainly in teacher training, economics, technology and agriculture.
History
Hong Duc University was established by Decision No. 797/TTg issued by the Prime Minister on 24 September 1997.[1] The university was founded based on three separate colleges of the Thanh Hoa province, namely: The Teacher Training College, the Economics & Technology College and the Medical College. In September 2004, the Medical College was declared to be independent from Hong Duc University.
The university is attached to the People’s Committee of Thanh Hoa, and is under the authority of state management from the Ministry of Education and Training and other ministries and central organizations, within their relevant functions and power.
Hong Duc University was established to train scientific, technological and management cadres with four year bachelor's degrees to meet the social-economic development of the province and neighboring provinces. The university also conducts research into the applied sciences and technology to support the process of industrialization in the province and country.
From 2006 to 2010, HDU was assigned a task by Thanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee and the Ministry of Education and Training: to train and co-operate in training quality undergraduate and postgraduates with study abroad training around the world.[2] The expense is contributed as a scholarship from the Thanh Hoa Government.
Location and Campuses
Hong Duc University is located in Thanh Hoa city, 160 km to the South of the capital, Ha Noi. HDU now has two campuses for studying and researching. The main campus was previously situated at 307 Le Lai Road, Dong Son Ward, Thanh Hoa City [3] but at present, the main campus is in Quan Nam, Dong Ve ward, Thanh Hoa city. Most of the Training Teacher students study in the second campus(307 Le Lai Road, Dong Son Ward, Thanh Hoa City). Students studying in other fields, such as Technology, Business Administration, and agriculture, study in the main campus.
Staff
Currently, Hong Duc University has 772 staff members, of which there are 3 senior experts, 105 senior faculty members, 315 faculty members, and 62 teachers. There are 32 staff members holding PhD Degrees and 189 holding master's degrees.
Students
HDU organizes the exam annually to enroll new students for every field of study in the university. The number of students continues increasing each year. There were 1800 new students for 2010’s enrollment, 2990 for 2011 and 2790 for 2012.

The university is currently training about 15,000 students, including 8,000 full-time and 4,000 part-time (2012).

Extracurriculars
- Miss University
Miss University is an annual event with the purpose of honoring the beauty of Vietnamese women and encouraging students to preserve and promote a model life. [6]
- Volunteer Activities
The Student Union of Hong Duc University holds many volunteer activities for students to join, such as teaching languages to orphans or helping new students with enrollment exams for residents. In addition, students can help people in poor villages during summer vacation.
