House of Buggin' is a Latino-themed sketch comedy television show, which aired on Sunday night at 8:30 pm est in 1995, starring John Leguizamo and Luis Guzmán. It was aired on the FOX Network, but removed from broadcasting schedules before the completion of the first season.
Brand of humor
The show was known for its brand of humor which involved offensive insults towards guests appearing on the show. The show also showcased John Leguizamo's well-known ability to assume a wide variety of colorful, energetic characters before moving into film, most notably dramas.
Background
Following the cancellation of In Living Color after its fifth season (1993-1994), FOX's quest to find a replacement series began. In 1994, FOX executives gave John Leguizamo a chance to fill the void which In Living Color left with his show, House of Buggin' . However, many critics and viewers believed that House of Buggin' lacked the edginess and creativity of its predecessor. Also FOX approached John saying that they wanted to change his cast. John strongly took a stand against the change of his mostly Latino cast. As a result, the show was not renewed at the end of the 1994-1995 season. After the cancellation of House of Buggin' , FOX decided to try once more to create a nighttime comedy sketch show. This time, in lieu of trying to exactly imitate the success of In Living Color, FOX decided to create a union between its former show's creative team and a magazine widely regarded as an icon of comedy and parody. The end result was the creation of MADtv.
