Hu Ge (born September 20, 1982 in Shanghai), is a Chinese actor and singer. While studying at the Shanghai Theater Academy, he was invited to play the leading role Li Xiaoyao in the 2005 television series Chinese Paladin, and immediately skyrocketed to fame as one of China's most popular actors. In September 2012, he was nominated for Best Newcomer at the 31st Hundred Flowers Awards for his role as Lin Juemin in Chinese historical film 1911. His most successful and renowned character is Mei Changsu (梅长苏) in the wildly popular 2015 TV Drama Nirvana In Fire (琅琊榜). Hu Ge is currently managed by Hu Ge Studio (胡歌工作室), contracted under Tangren Media.
Early life
Hu Ge was born in Shanghai in 1982. He received his first training in performing arts in Little Stars Performing Arts School run by Shanghai Media Group (SMG). Hu Ge attended Shanghai Xiang Yang Elementary School (1989–94) and Shanghai No.2 High School (1994-2001), both known for their educational rigor.
In addition to excellent academic work, Hu Ge's talents in a variety of extracurricular endeavors were also recognized. At age 14, Hu Ge started to host a popular TV show Sunshine Youth on Shanghai TV Education Channel[1] for three years. Meanwhile, he was also selected to host a program in East Radio Shanghai. Hu Ge began his acting career by appearing in TV commercials, which helped him gain financial independence before graduating from high school.
In 2001, Hu Ge was admitted to two prestigious art institutes in China: The Central Academy of Drama and Shanghai Theatre Academy. Hu Ge decided to attend the latter, particularly attracted by its strong major in acting.
Career
In 2005, Hu Ge played Li Xiaoyao in Chinese Paladin, a TV adaptation of the action RPG The Legend of Sword and Fairy. This role made Hu Ge as household name overnight,. Hs was especially popular among younger viewers who grew up playing the game the show was based on. Hu also recorded two songs for the series' soundtrack, which marked the beginning of his singing career. After Chinese Paladin, Hu embarked on a number of other TV projects, most of which had a wuxia theme. Hu also acted in a number of films during that period, including The Ghost Inside and The 601st Phone Call. In late 2008, he co-starred with Wu Chun and Charlene Choi in The Butterfly Lovers, a film based on the Chinese legend of the Butterfly Lovers. In the same year, he played the role of Guo Jing in The Legend of the Condor Heroes, an adaptation of Louis Cha's novel of the same title.
Hu performed many songs for the soundtracks of the television dramas he starred in. On 31 October 2006, Hu released his own EP, titled Treasure (珍惜) or Tell Her I Love Her (告訴她我愛她), which featured three songs. On 15 May 2008, Hu released his first full-length music album, titled Start (出發), which featured ten tracks. In August of the same year, Hu started filming Chinese Paladin 3, which aired on Zhejiang Television in June 2009.[1]
Hu starred as the male protagonist Yi Xiaochuan in 2010 Chinese television series The Myth, based on the 2005 Hong Kong film of the same title. It aired on CCTV-8, from 2 to 18 January 2010.[2] It acquired very high viewership ratings,[3] and boosted Hu's popularity to a new high, winning him several awards, including Best Actor in the legend genre at the Huading Awards 2010.[4] Trying hard to avoid being typecast, Hu subsequently stopped accepting ancient productions after he finished filming The Myth in 2009. During the two years that he didn't participate in ancient dramas, Hu participated as lead actor in Cafe, Modern People and Unbeatable.
Hu is the producer and male antihero Yuwen Tuo in the 2012 Chinese television series Xuanyuan Sword: Scar of the Sky, adapted from Xuanyuan Sword: Scar of the Sky, a role-playing video game in the series Xuanyuan Jian, developed by Taiwanese company Softstar Entertainment Inc.. Hu's excellent portrayal of his character's paradoxical personality earned him another Best Actor in the legend genre at the Huading Awards 2012.[5]
In 2012, Hu participated in CES produced nano-movie Refresh 3+7. He wrote the script for one of the stories Lights from the City, and participated in 4 out of the 10 stories. The nano-movie aired Dragon TV late 2012. He also starred in Romance of the Desert as second male lead Meng Jiu. The plot is based on the novel Ballad of the Desert. Aside from doing well in television series, Hu participated in two films during the period from 2010 to 2012. He was the revolutionary Lin Juemin in 2011 historical film 1911 and the male protagonist Hu Ming, a blind massager, in 2012 film DIVA.[6]
2013 has often been referred to as Hu Ge's year of theatre plays. Hu Ge acted as Patient No.5 in Stan Lai's A Dream Like a Dream (如梦之梦) and then as Xu Zhuang Tu (徐壮图) in Forever Yi Xue Yan (永远的尹雪艳), a play based on Pai Hsien-yung's novel of the same title performed in the Shanghai dialect. His performance in A Dream Like A Dream especially surprised many theatre critics, and garnered positive reviews all round.[7][8] As to why he took on two theatre plays one after the other, Hu stated, "When I graduated from university a while back, I suddenly felt quite nostalgic. I participated in many plays while in the Academy, and after acting in so many television dramas, I reached a few bottleneck periods. I did think it was time for me to return to the stage and refine my acting skills even more."[9] After his main rehearsals ended in mid-March, Hu Ge entered the crew of Forty Nine Days Memorial (四十九日祭), drama adaption of Geling Yan's (严歌苓) 13 Flowers of Nanjing (金陵十三钗) as Major Dai Tao.
In 2014, Hu Ge starred in his first modern family drama Life Revelations alongside Yan Ni, and then took on leading roles in Nirvana In Fire (琅琊榜), The Disguiser (伪装者) and Good Times (大好时光). Nirvana in Fire was a turning point in Hu's acting career,[10] and a commercial and critical success in its own right, surpassing ten million views by the second day,[11] and raking in daily internet views of over three hundred million by the end of its run. Global Times praised the story, acting and cinematography of the series, stating that it had restored viewers' confidence in Chinese period dramas.[12] Following his phenomenal surge in popularity and public awareness, Hu has also been appointed the Shanghai Tourism Ambassador.[13] Hu is currently filming Lie Chang (猎场), a drama produced by critically acclaimed director and screenwriter Jiang Wei (姜伟).[14]
Accident
Hu was involved in a car accident on 29 August 2006 while travelling from Hengdian to Shanghai on the highway. He survived with severe injuries while his assistant died. Hu had to undergo surgery and the entire healing process took approximately one year. The filming of The Legend of the Condor Heroes, which he was working on then, was temporarily halted due to his injury,[15] in addition to being unable to complete promoting his finished project, The Young Warriors, with his fellow cast members.[16] Hu expresses how he felt of the incident through the performance of his single, Dare to Love (去爱吧), and filmed a music video with his co-star from the two series and friend Cecilia Liu.[17]
Soon after the accident, he also published a book Scavenger of Happiness (幸福的拾荒者), filled with his thoughts on the accident and post events, interesting childhood events, well wishes from good friends and previously unexposed pictures. This book documented in detail the process of how Hu changed from a young idol with a smooth career path into an increasingly mature actor who could truthfully face life's problems as a scavenger of happiness.[18]
