Hunt Alternatives

Swanee Hunt Alternatives is a two-generation family operating foundation based in Cambridge, MA with a multi-million dollar annual budget. Swanee Hunt and the programs she leads bring daring goals, innovative practices, and extraordinary talent to some of the world’s most complex and injurious challenges.

History

Swanee Hunt Alternatives (originally Hunt Alternatives Fund) was founded in 1981 by Swanee Hunt and her sister, Helen LaKelly Hunt. In 1992, the organization split into two entities: The Sister Fund, based in New York City, headed by Helen Hunt; and Hunt Alternatives Fund, based in Denver and headed by Swanee Hunt. In 1997, after serving as U.S. Ambassador to Austria for four years, Swanee returned to the United States, moving to Cambridge to found the Women and Public Policy Program at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government.[1]

Programs

Chief Executive and Chair Swanee Hunt leads three major programs that advance global security and social justice in the United States:

The Institute for Inclusive Security advocates for full inclusion of all stakeholders (particularly women) in peace and security processes, consulting with governments, conducting field research, and providing leadership development for women leaders in conflict zones around the world.[2]

Demand Abolition combats the purchase of prostituted adults and children in the United States.[3]

Prime Movers supports, strengthens, and promotes social movement leadership to create a more caring, just, and democratic country.[4]

These initiatives are completing in 2016:

Political Parity finds innovative ways to advance women to the highest levels of U.S. political leadership.[5]

ARTWorks for Kids disseminates a model for strengthening arts organizations for disadvantaged youth.[6]

The foundation has driven and incubated several other successful organizations, including Women Moving Millions[7] and the Free for All Concert Fund.[8]

Swanee Hunt and the programs convene allies, build partnerships, and engage in high-level advocacy, training, research, and program-related grantmaking. The programs are assisted by a team—including communications, development, finance, human resources, operations, and information technology—that also supports Ambassador Hunt’s other professional and personal activities.
