Early life

Hwang Hee-chan was born in Chuncheon, but his entire family moved to Bucheon right after his birth. There he lived until he became eleven years old.[2] He started to play football in Singok Elementary School in Uijeongbu, South Korea. In 2008, he scored the most goals in both Hwanrang-Daegi Youth Cup and Dongwon Youth Cup. His performance also continued in South Korean U-12 national team: he scored 22 goals in Kanga Cup, which was the highest record in history of Kanga Cup. With outstanding performances in these competitions, he was awarded the grand prize of the 21st Cha Bum-Kun Football Award.[3]

After graduating from Singok Elementary School, he started to play in Pohang Jecheol Middle School Football team, which is also the Pohang Steelers U-15 team. In 2011, Pohang Jecheol Middle School Football Team won the regional and national competitions, and Hwang Hee-chan was named as the MVP of Korean Football Association U-15 league. [4]

In 2012 AFC U-16 Championship, he scored hat-tricks against North Korea.[5]

Subsequently, he joined Pohang Jecheol High School football team, which is the Pohang Steelers U-18 team. In 2013 Adidas All-in Challenger League he scored 12 goals in 12 games for his team, leading Pohang Jecheol High School win the league.[6] In the following grand final series of Adidas All-in Challenger League, Pohang Jecheol High School won the championship, and he was the top scorer and the MVP of the competition. [7]

In 2014, The Pohang Steelers intended to sign forward Hwang Hee-chan as a Homegrown Player. FC Red Bull Salzburg, however, signed South Korean forward Hwang Hee-chan eventually.[8]
