iO Tillett Wright (born September 2, 1985) is an American artist, director, photographer, writer, film maker, activist, and actor.[1] Wright grew up in New York in a Jewish family, and was a professional film and television actor for 18 years. Wright is gender non-conforming and likes the usage of gender neutral or no pronouns. Wright prefers not to label her sexuality, stating in her TED talk that she is "just me, growing and changing in every moment." [2]
At 18, Wright founded a street art magazine, Overspray, in which she served as founding Editor in Chief until 2009.
As an actor, Wright appeared alongside Steve Buscemi, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, including a brief appearance on Sex and The City. Wright then became a featured columnist for T Magazine, at The New York Times. In addition, she had two regular blogs called Notes From The Underground—for which she reviewed underground performance—and The Lowdown.
Her current project Self Evident Truths examines Americans, asking them whether they are "other than straight", and photographing respondents who self-evaluate themselves to be "A[nything] other than 100% straight". To date she has photographed 8,447 people in over 30 cities across the USA.
Wright's photographs appeared on the cover of The New York Times magazine in August 2010, marking the beginning of her public photography career. On September 22, 2010, Wright opened Breedings, her first solo show of photographs, at Fuse Gallery in Manhattan. In August 2011, they debuted Camila, her second solo show, and Act Like You're Fine, a group show they curated at Tokyo's Vacant Gallery.
In 2016, Wright began co-hosting MTV's new TV show "Suspect" with Nev Schulman, the creator of MTV Catfish.
