I Hate Everything (often shortened to IHE) is a YouTube channel hosted and created by British vlogger Alex Bolton, a YouTube user from the United Kingdom and born in New Zealand. The channel is used to conduct criticisms and rants towards films, video games, social media, Internet memes, and other topics.[1][2] In another series he has created; entitled The Search For The Worst, he reviews films that are considered the worst of all time, usually that are the lowest-rated entries on IMDb.[1]
The channel gained widespread attention after a series of copyright disputes with Derek Savage, the creator of Cool Cat Saves the Kids, and for an incident where his entire channel was shut down without warning by YouTube. Afterwards, he joined forces with Doug Walker and YourMovieSucks to start a campaign questioning YouTube's policies and claims system. [3][4][5]
Channel history
Alex originated on YouTube making short sketches and unboxing video parodies with his friends.[6] Out of frustration towards the lack of success garnered by these videos, he began to make videos which criticised popular YouTube personalities. Though those videos were somewhat successful, they were nonetheless disliked by the majority of the YouTube community, and Alex has since removed the channel from existence, even personally referring to those early videos as "vigorously lazy and unbelievably terrible".[6]
On August 25, 2013, he uploaded his first video to the I Hate Everything channel, entitled "I HATE PEWDIEPIE" (later renamed "I HATE PEWDIEPIE'S RABID FANS"), which criticised the fanbase of the popular Let's Player and YouTube personality PewDiePie.[7] Since then, he has offered his negative, and often exaggerated, opinions on a wide variety of topics, including the My Little Pony and furry fandoms; websites like Facebook, DeviantArt, and 4chan; video game series such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Pokémon, and Five Nights at Freddy's; and numerous other subjects, including the Ice Bucket Challenge, anime, and emojis. He has also frequently expressed disdain for the comic book superhero Aquaman.
On October 17, 2013, he established another series on the channel, entitled Comment Comeback, which revolves around Alex reading the comments of other YouTube users on his I Hate videos.[8] His third series to be established is known as Trying to Watch, which consists of abridged commentary of Alex viewing negatively received films, though the first video in the series involves Alex watching the children's animated television series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.[9]
A review for the historical film Druids was uploaded to the I Hate Everything YouTube channel on July 11, 2014, marking the beginning of the series The Search For The Worst, wherein Alex reviews the most negatively rated films on IMDb.[2][10] Since then, a multitude of films, some of which do not actually appear on the lowest-rated list on IMDb, have been featured on the series, including the animated film Foodfight!, the family film The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, and the superhero mockbuster film The Amazing Bulk.
As of March 2016, the channel has uploaded only one video in an antithesis series entitled I Love Everything, in which Alex expresses his appreciation for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.[11]
Alex is also a cast member on JAR Media; a channel where he, as well as his half-brother Jamie and his friends James and Ruben, discuss movies and other topics. They also host a podcast called the Jarcast.
Controversy
On November 6, 2015, Alex uploaded a review of the 2015 film Cool Cat Saves the Kids for his The Search For The Worst series. Three days later, on November 9, the video was removed from YouTube by the film's director, Derek Savage, although the video had not violated any fair use laws.[1][4][3] With the support of other YouTube personalities, including the channel YourMovieSucks, he submitted a dispute against the copyright infringement claim, and exchanged numerous emails with Savage regarding the claim.[4]
Following the email conversations with Savage, on November 13, Alex received a notice via email that he could be penalized for copyrighted material present in his review of the film Jurassic Shark. However, Alex, along with the channel YourMovieSucks, found reason to believe that the email was fabricated by Savage, as when Alex and YourMovieSucks contacted the creators of Jurassic Shark, the creators stated that they had nothing to do with such warnings.
On November 27, the review of Cool Cat Saves the Kids was made public on YouTube once again. However, on January 19, 2016, the I Hate Everything channel was removed from YouTube entirely.[2] The reason for this was blamed upon the flagging of one of the channel's videos, which involved Alex filming himself destroying copies of the 2008 animated film The Little Panda Fighter.[4] The channel has since returned to YouTube, and along with the controversy surrounding the channels Channel Awesome and Markiplier, the incident has shed light on the issues currently facing YouTube's copyright system.[4][3][5]
The incident has been associated with controversy surrounding the YouTube duo Fine Brothers, in which they flagged various YouTube videos with allegations of copyright infringement.[4][12][13]
On February 23, Alex uploaded the video I Hate Damn Daniel criticizing the meme Damn Daniel.[14] Two days later, he uploaded a video accusing Merlin Network of false copyright claims against his video. On February 27, Alex removed the video and posted to Twitter "We have come to a mutual agreement to resolve the situation."[15]
