I Went for a Walk is a children's book authored by Shanti Wintergate and illustrated by her husband Greg Attonito in 2007.[1] The plot follows "an unnamed narrator through a journey of self-discovery while on a search for food."[2] In 2014, I Went for a Walk won the Creative Child's 2014 Preferred Choice Award.[3]

History

Production

Singer-songwriter Shanti Wintergate had first though of the book while sitting at a cafe in Venice, California[4] around 2002,[2] and she completed[5] the first draft within several weeks.[6] The plot follows "an unnamed narrator through a journey of self-discovery while on a search for food. He travels all over the world and into space, as well as two mysterious worlds."[2] She continued making adjustments to the story over the next five years,[2] and for the 40 "whimsical" illustrations she brought in her husband Greg Attonito.[2] San Francisco Gate wrote that "Attonito illustrated two pages, liked what he saw enough to continue and spent almost five years completing the project, stopping to draw 'anywhere and everywhere' during his band's tour stops."[6] The pictures were completed with paint pens[4][5] by Attonito while he was touring with his punk band The Bouncing Souls through Europe, Japan, and Australia.[7] He explained he worked on the project "on planes, on park benches, on beaches, backstage, hotel rooms. You name it."[6]

Release and reception

Wintergate and Attonito self-published the book in September 2007,[6] on their imprint Hollywood Jersey.[5] The book was positively reviewed by Brian McConville of Blogcritics,[8] while Jackson Ellis for Verbicide Magazine gave it a mixed but largely positive review.[9] A staff review at About.com gave it 4.5/5 stars.[4] In 2007 Wintergate and Atonnito toured in locales[5] such as San Francisco doing book readings.[10] Among other venues they played at a number of book stores and elementary schools, blending book readings with musical performance.[6] San Francisco Gate wrote about their early children's music that "the songs are kid friendly but parent accessible, and the artwork in the book has an edgy, almost dreamlike quality that wouldn't look out of place on the front of a punk rock album."[6] In 2014, I Went for a Walk won the Creative Child's 2014 Preferred Choice Award.[3]
