Ian Cathro (born 11 July 1986) is a Scottish football coach. He is currently assistant coach with Newcastle United.

Playing career

Cathro played youth football for Forfar Athletic and Brechin City.[2] He never played as a professional.[3]

Coaching career

After working as a local youth coach in Dundee, Cathro became the head of Dundee United's youth academy at the age of 22.[3] During his time with Dundee United, he also worked for the Scottish Football Association's local youth programme.[3] During his time in Dundee Cathro helped bring through a number of notable young talent working with players such as Ryan Gauld and John Souttar from a young age, Gauld has cited Cathro as one of the biggest influences on his career.[4][5]

In 2012, he became the assistant manager of Portuguese club Rio Ave.[3] In 2014, he followed Nuno, his manager at Rio Ave, to Spanish club Valencia, where he also became assistant manager.[1][6] The two had first met at an SFA coaching course in Scotland in 2009.[1][6] He resigned his Valencia post on 11 June 2015.[7] A fortnight later, he agreed to join Premier League side Newcastle United as assistant to Steve McClaren, the recently appointed manager.[8]

In march 2016 Steve McClaren was sacked from Newcastle United and replaced by Rafael Benítez. When Benítez was hired he kept Cathro on as Newcastle United's assistant manager because he had a good reference about Cathro.[9] In May 2016 Dundee United were relegated from the SPFL and subsequently sacked manager Mixu Paatelainen, Cathro then became the favourite amongst the media and Dundee United support.[10] [11]
