Ian Jordaan (engineer)
Ian Jordaan is a Canadian engineer with expertise in design of offshore structures for harsh, cold environments. He is currently Professor Emeritus and University Research Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland.[1] He is also President of the consulting company Ian Jordaan and Associates. He has advised on offshore projects on Canada's East Coast, in the Caspian Sea and in the Arctic. His contributions to Engineering and Applied Science lie in two main areas: mechanics and probabilistic analysis. His work in mechanics has focused on inelastic, time-dependent and nonlinear behaviour of materials and the related analysis of structural systems. This resulted in work on the failure mechanism of ice in compression against offshore structures, including the mechanics of ice-induced vibrations. He has developed approaches to risk-based offshore design and estimation of structural loads caused by ice.
In 2005 he was named Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering[2] and in 2011 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.[3]
Education and Career
Ian Jordaan received Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, and a PhD from University of London, King's College, U.K., in l969. He then joined the University of Calgary’s Civil Engineering Department, working on time-dependent effects in materials and probabilistic approaches to design. In 1982 he entered the private sector, as Head and later, Vice President of Research and Development, at Det Norske Veritas (Canada) Ltd. (DNV). He led several projects related to safety of arctic ships and offshore structures, and initiated and managed the major study “Probability-based Design Criteria for Ice Loads on Fixed Structures in the Beaufort Sea.
In 1986, Ian Jordaan was appointed to the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)-Mobil Industrial Research Chair in Ocean Engineering at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.[4] He continued his work on ice-structure interaction, with particular focus on challenges to oil and gas development in the Canadian offshore.
For his work on compressive ice failure, in 1999 he was awarded the Horst Leipholz Medal for his “contributions to mechanics”.[5] He completed the book Decisions under Uncertainty: Probabilistic Analysis for Engineering Decisions (Jordaan, Cambridge University Press) in 2005.[6]
In 2015 at the 34th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering, a symposium was held in recognition of his contributions to the field ice engineering.[7]
Contribution to Industry
Ian Jordaan has made contributions to industry, providing advice on design issues and research approaches and consultation on a broad variety of offshore and arctic projects. He led studies of design loads for the Terra Nova and White Rose Floating Production, Storage and Offloading Systems (FPSOs), as well as the Hebron project. He also worked to understand the pressures measured on the Molikpaq structure in the Beaufort Sea during 1986 using the Medof panels.
During his tenure as Principal Consultant for Ice Engineering with C-CORE, a Canadian research and development company specializing in harsh environment technology innovation, Ian Jordaan contributed to two international projects: first, developing methods of analysis for the ice loads on structures in the shallow Caspian Sea, and second, consulting on structural concepts for the Shtokman gas project in the deepwater Barents Sea. Ian Jordaan also worked with the C-CORE Ice Engineering team on design loads for the Confederation Bridge, a 13 km long bridge connecting Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.
Dr. Jordaan has served on or chaired national and international committees for setting and review of engineering design specifications and environmental safety regulations, particularly for Arctic and other ice-prone regions. He contributed to the Revisions to the Canadian Arctic Shipping Pollution Prevention Regulations, the expert panel of the RSC to study science and environmental risk issues related to oil and gas development offshore British Columbia, and to the development of ISO 19906, a standard on arctic offshore structures.[8]
