Ian Lariba nicknamed Yanyan is a Filipina table tennis player. She has represented the Philippines in international tournaments and is due to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Early life and education

Lariba was born in Cagayan de Oro[1] in October 13, 1994.[2] She started taking up table tennis at age 9 with her parents encouraging her to take up "something new" for the summer. Prior to taking up the sport, Lariba took up badminton at a sports complex in Cagayan de Oro but found herself to be too small for the sport at that time. At the age of 10, Coach Noel Gonzales of the Philippine national table tennis team discovered Lariba while playing in the Palarong Pambansa. After just a year after taking up table tennis, she started to participate in provincial and national competitions.[3][4]

She decided to attend De La Salle University for her collegiate studies. As early as around 2009, she was already inclined to choose De La Salle as her college over her other options she considered such as the University of the Philippines and Ateneo de Manila University.[3] She is taking up Management in Financial Institution as her major degree.[4]

Career

Collegiate

Lariba is also a varsity player for her university, De La Salle University playing at the UAAP Table tennis tournament. On her first season she was named as UAAP Season 74 Rookie of the Year and on the UAAP Season 75 her team won the championship and Lariba herself was named Most Valuable Player (MVP). Her collegiate team failed short of winning the championship at UAAP Season 76, winning games only to suffer a sweeping lost to UP Lady Maroons in the final.[3]

She led her team to winning the championship at UAAP Season 77 and was awarded a second MVP recognition along with being named UAAP Athlete of the Year along with Hannah Dato of Ateneo de Manila University and Janelle Mae Frayna of Far Eastern University.[5][6] She led her team to winning the championship at UAAP Season 78 again and was also named MVP once again.[7]

International

Lariba has represented the Philippines in international table tennis competitions. She led the Philippine team to accomplishing a first place finish at the Division 4 of the 2014 World Table Tennis Team Championships in Tokyo, Japan with Jamaica Sy.[5]

She has also competed at the 2013[4] and 2015 Southeast Asian Games and has qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics through the Asian qualification tournament held in Hong Kong in April 2016.[7] For the preparations for the Olympic qualifiers, Lariba was trained by Korean coach Kwon Mi Sook. The Korean coach herself was a medalist at the 1989 World Table Tennis Championships.[8]
