Vijayala Choleeswaram temple is located at Narthamalai in Pudukkottai district in Tamil Nadu.

This temple was built by Ilangovathi Araiyan in 825 AD. As per the Inscriptions found at the temple it was originally built by Sembudi ( Ilango Adi Araiyan ) and was damaged by heavy rain and was repaired and rebuild by Mallan Vithuman Mutharaiyar called Thennavan Tamil Adi Araiyan in 886 AD.

This temple is now called Vijayala Choleeswaram after the name Vijayalaya Chola, the imperial founder of Chola dynasty. This name was referred for the first time in 13th century inscription (Mara varman Sundarapandya inscription) and it has survived obscuring the fact that the temple was erected by the Mutharaiyars.
