Illarikam (Telugu: ఇల్లరికం) is a 1959 Telugu film directed by T. Prakash Rao and starring Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Jamuna. The songs are very popular, particularly bhalE chance-lE describes the virtures of the Telugu tradition Illarikam. It was remade into Hindi by L. V. Prasad as Sasural in 1961.

Illarikam literally means bridegroom goes to the bride family and lives permanently with them; as against the custom of bride going into the groom family. This custom is observed in some rich families where the bride is the only child to their parents.

The plot

Venu (Akkineni Nageswara Rao) studies with the help of his maternal uncle. He falls in love with the daughter of a zamindar (Gummadi Venkateswara Rao) i.e. Radha (Jamuna). He married to her and stays in their house as Illarkam. Sundaramma (Hemalatha), wife of Zamindar does not like this and insults him indirectly. Govindayya (C.S.R. Anjaneyulu) creates problems between Venu and Radha. How Venu solves all the problems is the story.

Crew

Production

After releasing the dubbed version of Tamil film Uthamaputhiran in Telugu, AV Subbarao dannounced his next project Illarikam with Nageswara Rao based on the story of Vemapti Sadasivabrahmam. Jamuna was selected to pair with ANR. The pair had earlier collaborated in Nirupedalu (1954). ANR suggested to remove the song – "Niluvave vaalu kanuladaana" as he felt the audience may not like the teasing song as by then the heroine had realised the truth but the producer and the director felt otherwise. After its release, seeing the audience response to that song, ANR conceded that he was wrong. Tatineni Ramarao started his career as an assistant director with Illarikam.[1]

Remakes

Illarikam was remade in four other languages. L.V. Prasad produced the Hindi version titled Sasural (1961) with Rajendra Kumar and B. Saroja Devi in the lead. T. Prakash Rao directed it. A.V. Subbarao himself remade it in Kannada as Mane Aliya (1964), in Malayalam as Kalithozhan (1966) and Tamil as Maadi Veettu Mappilai – (1967). The Tamil and Kannada versions starred the present day Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha in the female lead, the Malayalam version starred the hit pair Prem Nazir and Sheela. All these versions were box office hits.[1]
