Illinois State Superintendent

The Illinois State Superintendent, originally known as the Illinois Superintendent of Public Instruction, is an official of the U.S. state of Illinois responsible for overseeing the educational system. The office was created in 1854. Following the inaugural appointment of Ninian Wirt Edwards, the office was an elected position, but the superintendent is now appointed by the Illinois State Board of Education.
