India competed at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium. It was the first time that the nation had sent a team to the Olympic Games since a single athlete (Norman Pritchard) competed for India twenty years earlier (see India at the 1900 Summer Olympics).
Ahead of the 1920 Olympics, Sir Dorab Tata and Governor of Bombay George Lloyd had helped India secure representation at the International Olympic Council and participate in the Olympic Games, and S R Bhagwat of the Deccan Gymkhana also helped with this effort. Some three months prior to the team leaving India, the Olympic Committee of Bombay, led by Dorab Tata, coordinated the effort to send a team to the Olympics. They secured funds, and held a trial Games at Poona in April 1920 to select the Olympic delegates. Ultimately, Chogale, Datar, Kaikadi, P.C. Bannerji, Navale, and Shinde were selected, and Sohrab Bhoot and A H A Fyzee[1] served as Managers for the team.
The Indian delegates then left Bombay for London aboard the s.s. Mantua on June 5, 1920, where they had eight weeks of training under coach Perry, after which they left for Antwerp. India would not miss a further edition of the Summer Games.
