Insight Venture Partners is an American private equity and venture capital firm based in New York, New York. The firm focuses exclusively on investing in technology, software and Internet-enabled businesses and currently has a capital base of approximately $13 billion[1] for this purpose.[2] The company has invested in well-known companies such as Twitter, Chegg, Tumblr, Flipboard, Zumba, SpareFoot, Quest Software, Jagex, Virgin Pulse,[3] Hootsuite and Hotel Urbano, a company established in Brazil. Insight’s investments include growth equity, capital for M&A, buyouts, take-privates, pre-IPO rounds and recapitalizations. The firm engages in majority and minority investments, and purchases both primary and secondary shares. Insight provides significant consulting resources to portfolio companies through its exclusive operations team called Insight Onsite.
Insight Venture Partners has raised nine funds and invested in more than 250 companies, of which 30 have achieved Initial Public Offerings (IPOs). The firm's performance is ranked among the top in the industry: Fortune magazine (August 20, 2012) listed Insight Venture Partners as one of the top-performing funds for the 2000 vintage year as determined by cumulative distribution divided by called capital (from 2000-2011).[4] In December 2011, CALPERS published information on the IRR and performance of its venture capital and private equity investments since 1991. Insight is 30th out of 280 investments, and the third highest in the 2005 vintage of 30 Funds.[5]
Background
Insight Venture Partners was founded in 1995 by Jeff Horing and Jerry Murdock. Since inception, Insight Venture Partners has raised $7.6 billion of capital to invest in its target industries.[1] Insight is currently investing from Fund VIII, a $2.57 billion capital pool.[6]
As of 2013, the firm has nine investment partners and two operations partners focused on finding growth-stage investment opportunities and assisting management teams as they grow their businesses. The firm’s Executive Advisory Board has included Robert Rubin (Chairman of Citigroup and 70th Secretary of the Treasury) and Steve Friedman (Chairman of the United States President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board and former Chairman of Goldman Sachs).
Insight Venture Partners is active globally with portfolio-company investments in 65 countries on six continents.
