International Emmy Award for best telenovela is a category of the International Emmy Awards, held since 2008 and which awards telenovelas outside the United States.

The growing worldwide popularity of telenovelas is reflected in a decision by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to establish a separate category for the genre.[1]

History

The best telenovela award was established in the 2008 by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Until 2007, the International Emmy awarded only the categories of best arts programming, actor, actress, comedy, documentary, drama series, non-scripted entertainment, TV movie/Mini series, children's program, current affairs program and news.[2]

The Brazil is the country with the most nominations, 7 in total, winning in 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2014, all of Rede Globo productions. In addition to a co-production in 2011 with the Portuguese network SIC, for Laços de Sangue.[3]

The International Emmy Awards are considered the biggest event of the TV market in the world, and its mission is to recognize excellence of content produced exclusively for TV outside the United States, as well as non-English language productions made for American TV.[4]
