The International Medical School (IMS) is a degree course offered by the faculty of medicine of the University of Milan at its campus in the Laboratorio Interdisciplinare Tecnologie Avanzate (LITA) in Segrate, Italy. It was founded in 2010, initially in collaboration with Humanitas Hospital, and later moved to the LITA campus in 2014. Its mission is to "provide graduates with both a solid, up-to-date scientific understanding of medicine, and a deep appreciation of the human and social complexities associated with health and disease.â€[1]
History
The "International Medical School" degree courses was originally founded in 2010, among the second group of English-language medical schools at Italian public universities, following the University of Pavia in 2009 and was often referred to as "MiMed". In 2014, following the inauguration of a private course at Humanitas University, the University of Milan decided to move the didactic activities of its IMS to the campus in LITA. [2][3]
Admissions
In 2015, the IMS enrolled 46 students from 22 different countries. One-third of seats are reserved for students who are not citizens of the European Union, nor certain affiliated states, such as Switzerland and Norway. The minimum International Medical Admissions Test score for first-round entry among EU-applicants was 50.1, representing approximately the top 2% of test-takers.[4] Tuition ranges from about €800 to €3900 per year.[5]
Curriculum
The school has a six-year program. The first two years are dedicated to pre-clinical studies. The following four years are clinical. The school emphasizes problem-based learning, interdisciplinarity, and translational medicine. Students have the opportunity to do part of their education abroad via the Erasmus Programme. All teaching is in English. Students are required to learn Italian.[6] The degree granted is a Dottore magistrale, styled in English as a Doctor of Medicine.[7][8]
Affiliate hospitals
The school's primary teaching hospital is the Azienda Ospedaliera Luigi Sacco in Milan. Students also do clinical training at any of nine other University of Milan teaching hospitals.[9]
