Hero

• Micheal 'Sonny' Murphy - Participated in the Men's 3000m steeplechase. He failed to finish due to heatstroke brought on by the excessive heat, hard training and woolen tracksuit the Irish team had to wear. From Kilnaboy Co.Clare, he died 4 years later from ill health caused by the heatstroke he suffered. The entire community raised the money for him to go over, even though there was a mini-famine at the time caused by an outbreak of TB. In his honour, There is a commemorative road race held every year, and a short film of his life, The Longest Ditch, directed by Hugh Farley, was made in 2004.
