Iritana Tāwhiwhirangi

Dame Iritana Te Rangi Tāwhiwhirangi DNZM MBE (born 1928), is an advocate of Māori language education and the Kohanga Reo movement.

She is of Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāpuhi, Canadian and English descent and is active in the Ngāti Porou community. She attended Hukarere Girls’ School.

She is a life member of the Māori Women's Welfare League and Toitū Kaupapa Māori Mātauranga - Māori Education Trust. She is on the Board of Trustees of the Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust.[1]

In the New Year Honours 1992, Tāwhiwhirangi was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire.[2] In the New Year Honours 2001 Tawhiwhirangi was appointed as Companion of The New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Māori education[3] and in the 2009 Queen's Birthday Honours was promoted to Dame Companion of The New Zealand Order of Merit.[4][5] She was a finalist for the 2014 New Zealander of the Year Awards.[6]
