Islamia English School (Arabic: المدرسة الإسلامية الانجليزية), abbreviated as IES, is in the Al-Dhafra neighborhood of Abu Dhabi. The majority of the students are children of Pakistani expatriates living in Abu Dhabi, with significant minorities of Indian, Bangladeshi, and Arab students as well. The students of the school are called IESers or IESians.
Education
The school used to be affiliated with Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (Islamabad, Pakistan)[1] for providing SSC and HSSC education. But it no longer teaches the Pakistani curriculum. Its affiliated with Edexcel for providing IGCSE and GCE Advanced Level education.
Academic subjects
The school was founded based on the principle of providing both secular (science, social science, modern languages) and Islamic education (Quran, Arabic language, Islamic studies) to students. It offers classes in maths, biology, chemistry, physics, Pakistan studies, Urdu, Easy Urdu (from grade 4 onwards for non-Pakistani+non-Arabs), Hindi, Bengali, Arabic, Islamic studies, social science, economics, accounting, business studies, English language, English literature, computer science and physical education. The school laboratories for carrying out experiments in chemistry, physics and biology are all well-equipped and comply with the safety procedures. There is a small mosque in IES. Those enrolled in the Hifz section, also go on to memorize the Quran.
Facilities
The school has good sports facilities, including football/cricket outdoor ground, and a gym which includes a regulation sized basketball court. The gym also holds other sporting events such as badminton matches and gymnastics from time to time. In recent year the school has started planning to take part in inter school sports competitions. Every year the Sports Department (PE) management makes a school team of different sports consisting of the best players from different houses and different classes.
The school also houses a library and a resource room. The library lets students borrow books on a weekly basis. The conditions of the library are not well, and the budget for new books is also less. The resource room is built so the students can plan their upcoming speeches, projects and presentation with teachers.
Every year the school management holds a picnic for each classes from KG-1 onward annually . From Grade 4 onwards, girls and boys have separate picnics.
The school also provides hostel accommodation facilities for the teachers. There are four buildings, one for the single male teachers, one for single female teachers, one for the support staff and a family block. The single hostels also consists of a mess.
Achievements
In the 16th Inter-School Athletic championship, Islamia English School secured the third position.[2] Even though IES students have shown strong performance in HSSC examinations, the school discontinued the FBISE classes in 2010. The last batch of FBISE graduated in 2012.[3]
The school also has a very successful Eco Club which is well known for its effort throughout the city. The Eco Club consists of five different teams. Energy, Waste, Water, Land, Air.
Recently the senior boys students have started a Student Council. The council has a system of taking suggestions from majority of the students and presenting it to the school management to solve. The Voice of the Voiceless.
In 2014 three girls won the 2nd Prize in the Public Speaking Competition at the Abu Dhabi University.
In 2013 two teams from the school went on to participate in the National Think Science Competition and winning participation prizes. They were one of 150 teams selected from all over the U.A.E. They won 500 AED as participation prizes.
In 2014 two more teams participated in the National Think Science Competition, with one of them winning the first prize in their category. They received 5000 AED as a prize. And an extra 500 AED each before announcement of positions as participation prizes.
In 2014 the Eco Club team also participated in the Eco Club Summit held at the Intercontinental Hotel.
The school has started thinking out of the box in the recent years due to pressure from the senior students and it has been successful from them.
The Student Council
They are selected from Grade 12. In order of Authority

2: President Student Council
3: Sports Captain
4: House Captains (Blue, Green, Red, Yellow)
5: Secretary (Cultural Activities, Literary Activities, Eco Club,IT)
6: Prefects (Seven)
The student council also consists of their own deputies from Grade 11.
The posts are decided on a students academic achievements, his willingness to work for the school, and his discipline. The posts are chosen by the senior teachers, the HM. The principal usually acts as an honorary head of office in sectional decisions.
Scout Troop
Islamia English School used to have its own Boys Scout troop and Girls Guide in the early 2000s and late 90s.[4] now it no longer has scout troops
