The Izumo Science Center (出雲科学館 Izumo Kagakukan) is a science center located in Izumo-shi, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Opened on 20 July 2002. The pupils in Izumo-shi, from third grade of primary school to junior high school, take the regular lessons of natural science with the latest instruments. Mainly on weekends, various events about science and handicraft are taken place. About 150,000 people, as many as the population of Izumo-shi, visit there every year.
This center is one of a rare institution that has functions of both "School education" and "Social education",
Facilities
Main building
Most of the functions are focused in the ground floor. This building has many types of facilities which utilize the environment, such as photovoltaics and a rainwater utilization system.
- Experience exhibition plaza (A lot of exhibitions which you can touch and move.)
- The latest information corner of 21st century (You can get the latest information about scientific developments.)
- Information station (Movies and books about science. You can use the internet as well)
- Science hall (Mainly science show with large equipment where lectures take place)
- Laboratorys and practice rooms (Science or handicraft activities)
- Creation atelier (There are many facilities for woodwork and metalwork.)
- Planetarium (15 programs such as "Tonight stars" or animations)
