J. B. Marks (21 March 1903 - 1 August 1972)[1] was a South African politician. At the time of his death he served as chairman of the South African Communist Party and treasurer-general of the African National Congress.[2]

Marks was part of the first generation of black South Africans that joined the Young Communist League in the 1920s. He took part in the Congress of the International Committee of Negro Workers, held in the Soviet Union in 1928.[3]

He was the leader of the African Mineworkers Union and in 1945 he was elected leader of the Council of Non-European Trade Unions.[4]

Marks was elected as president of the Transvaal African National Congress in 1951.[5]
