JANAF Shopping Center

The JANAF Shopping Center in Norfolk, Virginia was one of the first large suburban shopping centers in the United States. JANAF stands for Joint Army Navy Air Force, referring to the original investment group that was composed of retired and active duty military personnel. The shopping center opened in 1959. One of America's largest shopping areas with nearly 1,000,000 feet of retail space, JANAF contains a public library branch, medical center, and 19 restaurants as of 2013. JANAF has a center garden courtyard as well. JANAF was built at the north-east corner of Military Highway and Virginia Beach Boulevard on property which had formerly been used as an airfield. It sits across Virginia Beach Boulevard from The Gallery at Military Circle, an indoor mall built in the 1970s.
