JR Hutson (born Lee Hutson Jr.) is an American soul and R&B producer and songwriter, who has worked with artists including Jill Scott and Musiq Soulchild.[1]

Biography

Hutson was born in Chicago.[2] His first musical training came when he travelled nationwide performing with a Princeton American Boys Choir.[2] He moved to Miami as a teen and added bass, keyboards, songwriting, and vocals to his growing list of talents.[2] At the age of 15 he formed a vocal group called Living Proof for which he created and produced all the music, and the group was scouted by major labels but ultimately missed out on a recording contract.[2] After a brief apprenticeship with producer Teddy Riley in Virginia Beach, Hutson moved to Los Angeles to reconnect with some of the executives he had met there, landing work at Motown with songs and studio work for Zhane, Wayman Tisdale and Boyz II Men.[2]

A chance meeting with Pharrell Williams led to Hutson joining Star Trak Entertainment where he got to work on material for Faith Evans.[3] Although his tracks for Evans were not used the experience did enable Hutson to build up a sophisticated demo portfolio.[3] It was these demo recordings that would impress Hidden Beach Recordings A&R Charles Whitfield and lead him to recommend to Jill Scott that she work with Hutson, a collaboration would prove to be a very fruitful one.[3]

Personal life

Hutson is the son of Leroy Hutson the producer and former singer of R&B vocal group, The Impressions and a professional opera singer mother.[1][3] He is currently based in Los Angeles.[1]
