Jack Byrne (born 24 April 1996) is an Irish professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for SC Cambuur[2] on loan from Manchester City. Byrne plays predominantly as a central midfielder, though he can also operate as an attacking midfielder or as a winger.
Club career
Byrne started playing football for St Kevin's Boys at the age of five and moved to England to join Manchester City at the age of 15.[3] In the 2014-15 season Byrne scored 6 goals in 8 UEFA Youth League games for Manchester City U19.[3]
In the summer of 2015, Byrne joined Eredivisie side Cambuur on loan. After missing the first six weeks of the season due to an ankle injury picked up in pre-season, Byrne made his professional debut on 19 September in a match against FC Twente.[4] He scored his first goal for the club on 20 December 2015 in a 4-1 away victory against Excelsior. On 27 February 2016, Byrne got his first home goal for Cambuur, which proved to be the winning goal with 5 minutes to go against PEC Zwolle in a 1-0 win.[5] He scored his third goal for Cambuur on 13 March 2016, giving them the lead against Heracles Almelo after 32 minutes. Heracles went on to win the game 3-1.[6] On 1 May 2016, Byrne scored the second goal for Cambuur against PSV in a 6-2 loss, which saw Cambuur relegated from the Eredivisie.
International career
Byrne has represented his native Ireland up to Under-21 level. He made his début for his country's Under-21 team when he was just 18 years old.[7] He has since won 10 caps. He was called up to train with the Irish senior team by manager Martin O'Neill in March 2016,[8] ahead of friendly matches against Switzerland and Slovakia, though Byrne did not feature in either game, instead returning to the Under-21 squad ahead of 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship Qualifying matches against Italy and Slovenia.
Personal life
Byrne's late father, John, died when Jack was 11 years old.[7]
