List of The X Factor finalists (Australia season 3)
The third season of The X Factor Australia was broadcast on the Seven Network.[1] It premiered on 29 August 2011 and ended on 22 November 2011.[2] Each category was mentored by one of the show's four judges, Guy Sebastian, Ronan Keating, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Mel B.[2] Sebastian was given the Under 25 Boys,[3] Mel B mentored the Under 25 Girls,[3] Bassingthwaighte had the Over 25s and Keating mentored the Groups. Reece Mastin was declared the winner, with Sebastian emerging as the winning mentor.[2]
Under 25 Boys
Reece Mastin
Reece Mastin was a 16-year-old contestant who originally came from Scunthorpe, England,[4] but moved with his family to Greenwith, South Australia six years ago. Mastin auditioned for The X Factor singing "Come Get Some" by Rooster. He cited Steven Tyler as his idol, and can also play the guitar, drums, bass and piano. Before entering The X Factor, Mastin recorded his first extended play (EP) and played in several bands.[5] He was announced the winner on 22 November 2011 and received a recording contract with Sony Music Australia.[2]
Johnny Ruffo
Johnny Ruffo was a 23-year-old contestant from Balcatta, Western Australia, who sang Jay Sean's "Do You Remember" at his audition. Before auditioning for The X Factor, Ruffo worked as a concreter and performed around Perth, Western Australia with electro-pop band Supanova. He cited Usher, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga as his musical inspirations.[6] Ruffo placed third in the competition.[2]
Declan Sykes
Declan Sykes was a 15-year-old contestant from Fitzroy, Victoria, who auditioned for The X Factor singing "High and Dry" by Radiohead. At the age of five, Sykes was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. Before entering The X Factor, he had already been to twelve schools because he was the target of bullies. Sykes cited Muse, Panic! at the Disco and Jeff Buckley as his musical inspirations.[7] Sykes was eliminated in week eight after judges Mel B, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Ronan Keating voted to send him home.
Under 25 Girls
Tyla Bertolli
Tyla Bertolli was a 19-year-old contestant from Melbourne, Victoria, who auditioned for The X Factor singing "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence and the Machine. At the age of 14, Bertolli did work experience for an independent record label in Melbourne. A year later, she released her first extended play (EP), A Brilliant Tragedy, which featured songs she wrote herself. Bertolli cited Adele, Beyoncé, Katy Perry and Rihanna as her musical influences.[8] She was eliminated in week two after judges Mel B, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Guy Sebastian voted to send her home.
Jacqui Newland
Jacqui Newland was a 23-year-old contestant from Geelong, Victoria, who sang AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" at her audition. Prior to entering The X Factor, Newland was the lead singer of the cover band Plum Crazy, who performed gigs one or two nights a week in her hometown. Newland's biggest inspiration is her late father Neville, who lost his battle with cancer when she was 17 years old. She cited Beyoncé, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera as her musical inspirations.[9] Newland was eliminated in week three after Bassingthwaighte, Sebastian and Ronan Keating voted to send her home.
Christina Parie
Christina Parie was a 15-year-old contestant from Castle Hill, New South Wales,[10] who sang Kelly Clarkson's "I Do Not Hook Up" at her audition.[11] Parie was the lead singer of the five piece band Losing Sight. Before entering The X Factor, Parie and her band performed at cafes, festivals and venues across Sydney, New South Wales. Aside from singing her own original songs, Parie can also play the piano and guitar. In early 2011, she released her first extended play (EP) independently. Parie cited Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, The Cranberries and Pink as her musical inspirations.[11] She was eliminated in week seven after Bassingthwaighte, Keating and Sebastian voted to send her home.
Over 25s
Mitchell Callaway
Mitchell Callaway was a 25-year-old contestant from Bowraville, New South Wales, who auditioned for The X Factor singing Keith Urban's "Tonight I Wanna Cry". Callaway chose to pursue a music career after a near-death experience occurred in July 2010, when he broke his neck during a rugby league match. He cited Garth Brooks, Rascall Flatts and Alan Jackson as his musical inspirations.[12] Callaway landed in the bottom two with Johnny Ruffo in week six and they received two votes each from the judges, resulting in a deadlock. It was then announced that Callaway had received the lowest votes and was eliminated, placing seventh in the competition.
Cleo Howman
Cleo Howman was a 25-year-old contestant from Gold Coast, Queensland, who sang Florence and the Machine's version of "You've Got the Love" at her audition. After studying a Bachelor of Music at the Griffith Conservatorium, Howman self-funded her own album Diamonds and Rubies in 2008. Before entering The X Factor, she performed in coffee bars, restaurants, weddings and corporate events, and worked in retail. Howman cited Megan Washington, Sia, Clare Bowditch, Jewell and Dido as her musical inspirations.[13] She was eliminated in week one after judges Mel B, Ronan Keating and Guy Sebastian voted to send her home.
Andrew Wishart
Andrew Wishart was a 40-year-old contestant from Seaford, Victoria, who auditioned for The X Factor singing "Someone Like You" by Adele. Wishart's four children inspired him to audition for the show and suggested that he should sing that song for his audition. Before entering The X Factor, Wishart worked as a sales manager for the hot nut vending machine company Cupa Nutz. Wishart cited U2, John Farnham, Dire Straits, Queen and Robbie Williams as his musical inspirations.[14] Wishart was the runner-up of the season.[2]
His debut studio album It's Never Too Late was released on 4 May 2012, through Big Tree Recordings.[15] The album debuted at number 30 on the ARIA Albums Chart.[16] Wishart's debut single "Bare Upon You" was released on 17 October 2012.[17]
Groups
Audio Vixen
Audio Vixen was a three-member group based in Sydney, New South Wales and consisted of siblings Maria (aged 28), Christina (aged 25) and Ross (aged 19). They auditioned for The X Factor singing "Hold the Line" by Toto. Maria and Christina first performed as a duo and Ross later joined them five years earlier. Before entering The X Factor, Audio Vixen recorded an extended play (EP) and performed across Australia and the United States. Aside from music, Maria ran her own graphic design business, Christina was an office manager and Ross studied to become a music teacher. Audio Vixen cited Bon Jovi, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, The Beatles, Rob Thomas, Jet, John Mayer, Lady Antebellum, Coldplay, Led Zeppelin, The Black Crowes, The Faces, Thirsty Merc, Heart, Aerosmith and The Bee Gees as their musical inspirations.[18] Audio Vixen landed in the bottom two with Johnny Ruffo in week four and they received two votes each from the judges, resulting in a deadlock. It was then announced that Audio Vixen had received the lowest votes and were eliminated, placing ninth in the competition.
Three Wishez
Three Wishez was a three-member group that consisted of Frederico (aged 18), Sophia (aged 21) and Joseph (aged 23). They sang "Love the Way You Lie" by Eminem at their audition. Before entering The X Factor, Three Wishez were students at the Australian Institute of Music in Sydney, New South Wales and were formed as a group one year earlier. They cited The Black Eyed Peas, Jessie J, Christina Aguilera, Chris Brown, John Legend, Ne-Yo and Mario as their musical inspirations.[19] Three Wishez placed fourth in the competition.
Young Men Society
Young Men Society is a three-member group consisting of Andi (aged 23), Josh (aged 22) and Nathan (aged 26). They sang "Cooler Than Me" by Mike Posner at their audition. Andi and Josh first met at church when they were 15 years old and later they joined forces with Nathan after meeting him at their hip hop dance class. Young Men Society cited Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, Brian McKnight, Jodeci, Robin Thicke, Five and 'N Sync as their musical inspirations.[20] Young Men Society landed in the bottom two with Declan Sykes in week five and they received two votes each from the judges, resulting in a deadlock. It was then announced that Young Men Society had received the lowest votes and were eliminated, placing eighth in the competition.
