Jakob Bro (1978) is a Danish guitar player and composer living in Copenhagen, Denmark.
He is currently leading a trio with Joey Baron and Thomas Morgan. This trio recorded a new album for ECM Records in November 2015[1] set to come out in the autumn 2016. He is also working with Palle Mikkelborg and with Bro/Knak, a collaboration with the Danish electronica producer Thomas Knak (Opiate).
He is a former member of Paul Motian & The Electric Bebop Band[2] (Garden of Eden, ECM – 2006) and a current member of Tomasz Stanko’s Dark Eyes Quintet[3] (Dark Eyes, ECM – 2009).
He has released 12 records as a bandleader including musicians like Lee Konitz,[4] Bill Frisell, Paul Motian, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Bley, Chris Cheek, Thomas Morgan, Ben Street, Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Andrew D’Angelo, Chris Speed, George Garzone, Oscar Noriega, David Virelles and many more. He has toured in Japan, China, South Corea, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, South Africa, USA and most of Europe.
In 2016 and 2013 Jakob Bro received The Carl Prize ‘Jazz Composer of the Year’[5] (for the albums Gefion and Bro/Knak). From 2003-2016 he received six Danish Music Awards; three for ‘Danish Jazz Album of the Year’ (Gefion,[6] Balladeering[7] and Sidetracked[8]), two for ‘Danish Crossover Album of the Year’ (Bro/Knak[9] and Sidetracked[10]) and one for ‘New Danish Jazz Artist of the Year’ (for the album Beautiful Day[11]).
In 2009 and 2013 Bro received The Jazz Special Prize for ‘Danish Jazz Album of the Year’ (for the albums Balladeering and December Song) and in 2013 he also received ‘The Jazznyt Prize’ founded by Niels Overgaard[12] (for December Song). In 2012 he received the 'DJBFA honorary award' and in 2006 and 2012 The Danish Arts Foundation rewarded Bro for his recordings Pearl River and Bro/Knak.
In 2014 Jakob Bro was nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize[13] for his trilogy Balladeering/Time/December Song.
