Sir James Richard William Goss Kt QC, (born 12 May 1953), styled The Hon. Mr Justice Goss, is a British High Court judge. He was previously a Queen's Counsel, specialising in criminal law.
Early Life and Education
Goss was born on 12 May, 1953 to His Honour Judge William Alan Belcher Goss, a Barrister and County Court Judge, and his wife Yvonne née Samuelson.
He was educated at Charterhouse School and University College, Durham[1] where he graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts in Law.[2]
Legal Career
Goss was called to the bar at Inner Temple in 1975. He was a recorder from 1994-2009 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1997.
Noted in the Legal 500 as one of Britain's leading criminal barristers and especially for his cross-examination abilities, he prosecuted Gary Hart in the Great Heck rail crash case (2001).[3] He also prosecuted David Moor (1999) for the euthanasia of a patient.
He was appointed as a Legal Member of the Mental health tribunal in 2003, as a Legal Member of the Restricted Patients Panel in 2006 and in 2009 he was appointed a Circuit Judge on the North Eastern Circuit. In 2011 he was appointed as a Senior Circuit Judge and Honorary Recorder, Resident Judge of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.[4]
In October 2014 he was appointed a judge of the High Court of Justice (Queen's Bench Division),[5][6]receiving the customary knighthood and was appointed a Knight Bachelor.
Personal Life
He married Dawna Elizabeth Davies in 1982. He and Lady Goss have two sons (George and William), and three daughters (Alexandra, Prunella and Claudia).
