James P. "Jimmy" O'Neill is an American police officer who has been the Chief of Department of the NYPD since 2014. Chief O'Neill is the 38th person to hold the post, which before 1973 was designated as Chief of Operations and prior to that of the Chief Inspector.

O’Neill joined the New York City Transit Police he began his career as a patrolman in Transit District 1. Four years later he was promoted to Sergeant in September 1987. in April 1991 he was promoted within the ranks to Lieutenant. Later in that decade he was promoted to Captain in 1997. Additional promotions included that of a Deputy Inspector in December 2001, then to Inspector in August 2003, and Deputy Chief in October 2005. Then on June 2, 2014 O’Neill was promoted to Chief of Patrol the assignment he held prior to his current appointment.

Education

Chief O'Neill holds a B.A. in Government and a M.P.A. from John Jay College.

Promotion to Chief of Department

As of October 28, 2014, it was reported that Chief O'Neill will now manage the department’s 35,000 uniformed officers as Chief of Department, the highest-ranking uniformed position.[2]
