James Reynolds (composer)

James Reynolds (born 1953 in Long Beach, California), is a composer of music for radio plays, theatre and opera. He is a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where he studied contemporary music with John Adams.

He lived and worked as a percussionist in San Francisco and New York, where in addition to playing drums in Broadway theater he was a member of the synth/punk band The Units. In 1985, he began working and living in Cologne, Germany. Where he studied with Michael von Biel and Caroline Wilkins.

Since 1995, he has composed the music for more than 100 radio plays for the West German Radio (WDR); he has also composed music for theatre and musical-theatre stage plays, ballet, and opera. He also works with the Austrian director Johann Kresnik. Reynolds pieces have been performed in Germany, the United States, Austria, Switzerland and in Israel.

He is currently composing an opera Ghost Knight based on the book from Cornelia Funke.
