James Richards (born November 7, 1969) is a former professional American football offensive guard in the National Football League and Canadian Football League. He was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round (64th overall) of the 1991 NFL Draft. He played college football for the University of California, Berkeley.

Early years

Richards attended Antelope Valley High School where he played offensive tackle.[1] He moved on to play offensive guard at Cal State Northridge, before transferring to Antelope Valley College in 1988.[2] In 1989 he accepted a scholarship to the University of California, where he was a two-year starter at offensive tackle.[3]

Professional career

Dallas Cowboys

Richards was selected in the third round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. Although he played offensive tackle in college, he was drafted to play offensive guard. He was released before the season started and signed to the practice squad until October.[4]

Los Angeles Rams

On October 16, 1991, he was signed to the Los Angeles Rams practice squad and was released on November 7, 1991.[5][6]

Dallas Cowboys

After being waived by the Los Angeles Rams, he spent the rest of the season on the Cowboys travel squad.

Phoenix Cardinals

On February 4, 1992, he signed with the Phoenix Cardinals and spent most of the season on their practice squad,[7] until being waived on November 10, 1992.[8]

Dallas Cowboys

On April 13, 1993, he signed with the Dallas Cowboys but was released before the season started.[9][10]

Las Vegas Posse

Richards played for the expansion Las Vegas Posse of the Canadian Football League in 1994.
