Jared Corey Kushner (born January 10, 1981) is an American businessman and investor. He is principal owner of the real estate holding and development company Kushner Properties and the newspaper publishing company The New York Observer. He is the son of American real estate developer Charles Kushner and is married to Ivanka Trump, the daughter of Donald Trump.

Early life and education

Kushner is the eldest son of Seryl (née Stadtmauer) and real estate developer Charles Kushner.[1][2] He has a brother, Joshua, who is also a businessman, and two sisters, Nicole and Dara.

The Kushner family has completed more than $13 billion in real estate transactions since 2007, and today owns more than 20,000 multifamily apartments and 12 million square feet of office, industrial and retail space in five states.[3]

Kushner was raised in a Jewish family in New Jersey.[4] He graduated from the Frisch School, a private, coed yeshiva high school in Paramus, New Jersey, and from Harvard College in 2003 with an A.B. in sociology. According to journalist Daniel Golden, Kushner and his brother Joshua Kushner were admitted despite modest academic credentials after their father had made a $2.5 million donation to the university,[5][6] with the director of the school's college preparatory program describing Jared Kushner's admission to be "an unusual choice for Harvard to make" given that he was "not anywhere near the top of his class."[7][8]

In 2007, Kushner graduated from the New York University where he earned his JD degree and his MBA degree;[9] He interned at Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau's office.[10]

Business career

Newspaper publishing

In July 2006, at age 25, Kushner purchased The New York Observer, a weekly New York City newspaper, for $10 million,[11] using money he says he earned during his college years by closing deals on residential buildings in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with family members providing the backing for his investments.[12]

Since purchasing The Observer, he has pushed for changes to increase sales and created a new focus for the paper, moving towards a tabloid format.[13] Kushner has been credited with increasing the Observer's online presence and expanding the Observer Media Group.[14][15] In December 2011, The New York Post reported that the Observer expected to become profitable for the first time.[16]

Real estate

Kushner is an active real estate investor and has increased the Kushner Companies presence in the New York City real estate market as a principal in his family's real estate company.[17] Kushner's father, Charles, was arrested on charges of tax evasion, illegal campaign donations and witness tampering in 2004 and was eventually convicted of the above-mentioned charges.[18] He assumed the role of CEO in 2008.

The company's flagship acquisition was the office building at 666 Fifth Avenue in 2007, for a then-record price of $1.8 billion. In 2011, the building's mortgage was restructured in conjunction with Kushner's bringing in Vornado Realty Trust as a 50% equity partner.[19]

On August 18, 2014, Kushner acquired a three-building apartment portfolio in Middle River, Maryland for $37.9 million with Aion Partners. In 2013–14, Kushner remained an active buyer of multifamily properties in New York, New Jersey and the Baltimore area, and his company acquired more than 11,000 units throughout the three states.[20] In May 2015, he purchased 50.1% of the Times Square Building from Africa Israel Investments Ltd. for $295 million.[21]

Los Angeles Dodgers bid

In February 2012, he put a bid in to acquire the MLB team the Los Angeles Dodgers.[22] He later withdrew his bid in March 2012.[23]

Political activity and role in Trump presidential campaign

Kushner is a contributor to the Democratic Party (United States)|Democratic Party]]. He has contributed over $100,000 to various campaigns between 1992 and 2006.[24]

For the presidential campaign of his father-in-law Donald Trump, Kushner has served as "an emissary to the Jewish community," helping to plan a trip to Israel (that would be cancelled) and to write Trump's speech delivered to AIPAC. He has also "tapped his network" by seeking to introduce Trump to Republican donor Paul Singer and to improve his relationship with Rupert Murdoch of Fox News.[25]

Personal life

Kushner married Ivanka Trump, daughter of businessman Donald Trump, in a Jewish ceremony on October 25, 2009.[26][27] Ivanka Trump converted to Judaism before marrying Kushner.[28] The couple have three children: daughter Arabella Rose Kushner (born July 2011) and sons Joseph Frederick Kushner (born October 2013) and Theodore James Kushner (born March 2016). As of 2016, his brother Joshua Kushner is in a relationship with model Karlie Kloss.
