Jared McCann (born May 31, 1996) is a Canadian ice hockey player. He is currently playing with the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL). McCann was selected by the Canucks in the first round (24th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Playing career

McCann was selected 4th overall in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.[1] He was rated top

McCann during the 2014 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game

Playing with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, McCann was recognized for his outstanding performance[2] during the 2012–13 season when he was named to the OHL Second All-Rookie Team.[3] McCann was also selected as a member of Team Ontario for the 2013 World U-17 Hockey Challenge. Following the 2012–13 season, McCann was named to Team Canada's National Men's Summer Under-18 team[4] and he competed at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament to win the gold medal with Team Canada.[5]

McCann was a top 2014 NHL Entry Draft prospect.[6] After his selection by the Canucks he was later signed to a three-year entry-level contract on July 24, 2014.[7]

Following an impressive training camp, McCann was named to the Canucks' roster for the start of the 2015–16 NHL season on October 5, 2015.[8] He made his NHL debut on October 7, 2015 against the Calgary Flames. In the third period, he passed the puck to teammate Alexandre Burrows who scored a goal on that play. However, that goal was deemed an own goal by the Flames and due to an NHL rule, he was not awarded an assist. On October 10, 2015, the following game, he scored his first NHL goal against Jonas Hiller of the Calgary Flames.[9] On November 1, 2015 the Canucks announced that McCann and fellow rookie Jake Virtanen would remain in the NHL beyond their 9 game tryout period.[10] His first career assist came on a Jannik Hansen goal, on November 4, 2015, in a 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.[11]
