Jath (Marathi:जत,Kannada : ಜತ್ತ) is a town and taluka headquarters in Miraj subdivision of Sangli district in southern Maharashtra in India. It is often spelled as "Jath" according to South Indian lexical nomenclature. Jat is one of the largest talukas in Maharashtra state. Jat is sort of infamous for its famine-prone geographical conditions. It has been historically demographic part of Man Desh.
It was the former capital of Jath State, one of the non-salute Maratha princely states of British India, under the Bombay Presidency, and later the Deccan States Agency. It was a southern Maratha Jagir.
History
Some sources say, in ancient period, town was called Jayantinagar. Jat was capital of former Maratha Jagir ruled by Dafales. Most of the dynasty period was affiliated to Vijayapura(Bijapur). For some period it was associated with Kolhapur as well as Satara Maratha Dynasties. Later Jat became a non-salute princely state until independence of India. Then it was part of Satara district. When Sangli district was formed, Jat became eastern tehsil of Sangli.
Demographics
Official languages are Marathi(primary), Kannada. All the villages have large number of Kannada speaking population, due to its close vicinity of Kannada speaking region. The Kannada population is in a majority throughout Jath.[1][2][3] Mahajan commission offered 44 Kannada villages to be transferred to Karnataka.
Culture
Jat taluka is surrounded by various religious places, one of them is Daridev (Dari Appa) this place located south west of Jat near to Muchandi Village. Daridev is an incarnation of lord Shiva, lot of devotees from Maharashtra and Karnataka visit this place during full moon. Annual Fair (Jatra) is celebrated in second week of April each year, this is the time when lot of people come to their home town to visit their God (Kuladaivata).
Near to Jath city on a hill, a very nice temple of Ambabai (Mahalaxmi) is situated. People come to take blessings of Maa Amba during Navaratri Festival. This place used to be a dense forest. However due to less rain and deforestation, greenery of this place is vanishing and we can see only a bare hill with a temple from a remote distance.
Mata Yallamma (Gram Daivata) temple is to the South of Jath city. Aai (mother) Yallamma is an incarnation of Goddess Durga/Laxmi. During Chaitra Poornima (Full Moon), a flood of people come to take blessings of Aai. Jatra (annual fair) is arranged in the month of Margasheersh. During this time, a lot of people come from every corner of Karnataka and Maharashtra. The biggest Bail Bazar (Cattle fair) which is organized during this period is a good time for farmers to sell/buy cattle. The place derives its name from Jath which in Kannada means Ox(cattle).
Guddapur is also a very famous religious place for devotees from Karnataka for Goddess Dhanamma Devi shrine.
