Javare Gowda

D. Javare Gowda (1918-) is a Kannada author and winner of the Padma Shri and the Karnataka Ratna and Nadoja awards. He is known as "De Ja Gow" in literary circles. His teachers were T.N. Srikantaiah. and Kuvempu

Career

He was the Vice Chancellor of Mysore University from 1969 to 1975. Prior to that he was Professor of Literature and Director of the Institute of Kannada Studies in the University.

Advocacy

Christianity instead of Hinduism
Addressing a Catholic audience he stated that India would have been a better place if it accepts Christianity instead of Hinduism to which he has no respect. According to him Christian writers have contributed to Kannda literature more than Kannadigas.^[4]

Kannada as a classical language
He observed a dawn-to-dusk fast^[5] seeking classical language status for Kannada. He also threatened to return the Padma Shri if the Centre did not accord classical language status to Kannada by January 1, 2006..
