He played for the St. Thomas Tommies in the Atlantic University Sport division of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport hockey league.

Undrafted by the NHL, Bourbeau played his first three professional seasons (2008–11) with the Odessa Jackalopes of the Central Hockey League and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League (AHL).
